About the piece
Painted in 1613 by the Dutch master Hendrick Goltzius, this work captures a moment from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Vertumnus, the god of seasons, disguises himself as an elderly woman to approach and counsel the wood nymph Pomona, who had barred all suitors from her orchard. The painting is a superb example of Goltzius' late style, blending Mannerist elegance with a burgeoning naturalism, particularly evident in the exquisite rendering of the autumnal still life at Pomona's feet.
