About the piece
Painted in 1657 by Gabriel Metsu, this masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age captures the personification of Justice in a rich, theatrical arrangement. Blindfolded and wielding both scales and a sword, she triumphs over a fallen figure representing Injustice. The scene is populated with celestial cherubs and earthly figures in distress, all rendered with the luminous texture and sophisticated brushwork characteristic of the period.
