About the piece
Painted around 1832 by German Romantic artist Carl Blechen, this oil study depicts the Monastery of Santa Scolastica near Subiaco, Italy. The work masterfully renders the steep, ochre-hued ravines and massive boulders, using brilliant sunlight to highlight the distant architecture against a vivid blue sky. Small figures with a donkey at the base of the gorge emphasize the grand scale and dramatic topography characteristic of Blechen's Italian works.
