About the piece
Painted around 1681–82, this profound work by Spanish master Bartolomé Esteban Murillo depicts the 'two trinities.' In the lower register, the Earthly Trinity—the Child Jesus with Mary and Joseph—is rendered with tender humanity. Above them, the Heavenly Trinity is completed by the Holy Spirit as a dove and God the Father presiding from the clouds, surrounded by a choir of cherubim. Murillo's signature soft brushwork and warm, radiant light create a cohesive and deeply moving vision of celestial unity.
