About the piece

Painted around 1600 by the pioneering Flemish artist Clara Peeters, this still life showcases her extraordinary ability to render diverse textures. From the glistening scales of the large carp in the earthenware colander to the metallic sheen of the pewter plate holding bright red crayfish, the work is a study in light and realism. Peeters was one of the few female artists of her time to specialize in the 'ontbijtjes' (breakfast pieces) and fish still life genres, and this composition exemplifies the refined elegance of the early Baroque period.
