About the piece

Painted in 1623 by Utrecht Caravaggist Hendrick ter Brugghen, this work depicts the classical story of Pero and Cimon. Through intense light and shadow, Ter Brugghen renders the emotional gravity of Pero secretly nourishing her imprisoned father to save him from starvation. The painting is a superb example of the Dutch Golden Age's engagement with dramatic, naturalist lighting and classical allegory.
