About the piece
Created in 1626 by Maarten Pepyn, this intricate oil painting captures the height of the biblical Exodus. Moses stands at the center, staff raised toward dark, storm-swept skies, as a diverse crowd of figures—including nursing mothers, travelers, and livestock—hastily cross the dry seabed. To the right, the composition erupts into chaos as the churning waters of the Red Sea overwhelm Pharaoh's horses and soldiers in a classic display of Flemish Baroque energy.
