About the piece

Painted circa 1665 by Caspar Netscher, this work is a superb example of Dutch Golden Age genre painting. Netscher was famed for his ability to render textures, most notably the luminous, heavy silk of the standing woman’s dress, which acts as the central light source against the deep, chiaroscuro shadows of the music room.
