About the piece
Painted around 1650 by the Neapolitan master Bernardo Cavallino, this oil on copper illustrates a famous episode from Roman legend. It depicts the hero Mucius Scaevola proving his resolve by thrusting his right hand into a sacrificial fire before King Porsenna. Cavallino's signature style is evident in the luminous, jewel-like finish of the copper support and the elegant, slightly elongated figure types that create a sense of refined theatricality.
