About the piece
Commissioned for the Grand Trianon at Versailles around 1690, this work by René-Antoine Houasse depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The luminous figure of Iris, goddess of the rainbow, breaks through the shadows of the Cave of Sleep to wake Morpheus. With its rich palette of royal blues and purples and masterful chiaroscuro, this piece exemplifies the refined elegance of French academic painting during the reign of Louis XIV.
