About the piece
Painted in 1787 by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, the official portraitist of Marie Antoinette, this work was a significant effort to reshape the Queen's public image through the lens of motherhood. The composition features the Queen in a magnificent red velvet gown, accompanied by her three children—the Dauphin Louis-Joseph, Marie-Thérèse, and Louis-Charles—set against the background of Versailles. The empty cradle is a poignant reference to her fourth child who had recently passed away.
