About the piece
Painted around 1730 by Roman master Andrea Locatelli, this work illustrates a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Seeking water after the birth of her twins Apollo and Diana, the goddess Latona was denied access to a pond by local Lycian peasants; as punishment, she transformed them into frogs. The composition is a masterful example of the Italian 'veduta ideate', blending classical mythology with an atmospheric, lush landscape.
