About the piece

Created in 1905 by Henry-Eugène Delacroix, this oil sketch was a preparatory work for the 10th arrondissement town hall in Paris. Part of an allegorical series on the senses, 'L'odorat' (Smell) features three figures amidst blossoming trees and rising incense. The piece is rendered in a delicate, atmospheric palette characteristic of the French fin de siècle, capturing the ephemeral nature of fragrance and evening light.
