About the piece
Created in 1738 by the Dutch artist Aert Schouman, this painting illustrates the Greek myth of Juno, Argus, and Io. Juno is shown descended from the heavens upon a bank of clouds, gesturing toward Io, who has been transformed into a white cow. The work displays Schouman's masterful handling of light and narrative, blending late-Baroque drama with a refined Rococo sensibility.
