About the piece
Painted in 1717 by Rachel Ruysch, one of the most successful still-life painters of the Dutch Golden Age, this work is a superb example of the 'sottobosco' or forest-floor style. The composition artfully contrasts the glowing skins of peaches and grapes with the dark, mysterious depths of a wooded setting, brought to life by meticulously rendered insects, a bird's nest, and a striking blue lizard.
