About the piece

Painted around 1650 by the Flemish artist Jan Miel, this work is a superb example of the atmospheric chiaroscuro associated with the Bamboccianti group in Rome. The composition features a hunting party and their animals resting outside an inn built into the monumental, weathered arches of a ruin, creating a powerful contrast between the deep foreground shadows and the golden light glowing through the distant vaults.
