About the piece
Painted in 1904 by Australian expatriate Rupert Bunny, 'Endormies' (The Sleepers) is a masterwork of the Belle Époque. The composition features two women in luminous, ruffled gowns resting on a sun-dappled bank, while white swans glide across a shimmering lake in the background. Bunny's sophisticated use of soft color and light creates a dreamlike atmosphere of opulent repose.
