About the piece
Painted in 1913 by Slovak artist Dominik Skutecký, this work is a superb example of his fascination with the copper forges of Banská Bystrica. The composition uses a sophisticated chiaroscuro technique, where the radiant heat of the furnace provides a brilliant focal point against the deep, soot-colored shadows of the workspace and the silhouettes of the workmen.
