About the piece

Created in 1723 for the Yongzheng Emperor, this work is a premier example of the 'Jing-Zhong-Xi' style pioneered by Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining), an Italian Jesuit who became a leading artist in the Chinese imperial court. The composition masterfully blends European chiaroscuro and three-dimensional realism with traditional Chinese symbolism: the evergreen pine and lingzhi mushrooms represent immortality, while the rare white falcon serves as a metaphor for heroic power and nobility.
