About the piece
Created in 1814 by the renowned French painter Jacques-Louis David, this late work depicts the story of the ancient Greek painter Apelles and his model Campaspe. Commissioned by Alexander the Great, Apelles supposedly fell in love with his subject, leading the King to generously gift her to the artist. David captures this tension with Neoclassical precision, utilizing a moody, chiaroscuro-inspired palette that emphasizes the luminous figures against the shadows of the studio.
