About the piece
Created by the Venetian master Sebastiano Ricci in 1716, this Rococo masterpiece depicts a famous scene from Ariosto's epic poem 'Orlando Furioso'. Medoro carves his and Angelica's names into a tree trunk while she leans against him, surrounded by playful putti under the shade of dense foliage. The painting exemplifies the luminous palette and fluid, graceful brushwork that made Ricci a sought-after artist across Europe's royal courts.
