About the piece
Painted in 1792 by Julius Caesar Ibbetson, this oil on panel work depicts a stagecoach in motion along a country road. Figures huddle atop the carriage as it passes a smoking cottage, while working horses in the foreground add to the narrative sense of a journey in progress. The soft, atmospheric light and muted earth tones are typical of British genre painting from this period.
