About the piece
Painted in 1784 by John Webber, the official artist on Captain James Cook’s third voyage, this work depicts a scene from the historic search for the Northwest Passage. Sailors from the HMS Resolution and Discovery are shown in small boats among the ice floes of the Arctic, hunting walruses—then known as 'sea-horses.' The composition expertly balances the vast, intimidating polar environment with the focused activity of the crew, rendered with masterful atmospheric detail.
